Celebrating Founders' Day with a MESSage

The Divine Nine refers to a group of historically Black Greek-letter organizations that were established over a century ago, primarily to foster a sense of community, leadership, service, and academic excellence among African American college students. These organizations were created during a time when racial segregation limited opportunities for Black students in higher education.

The nine organizations that form the Divine Nine are:

  1. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (ΑΦΑ): Founded in 1906 at Cornell University, it was the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men.
  2. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (ΑΚΑ): Founded in 1908 at Howard University, it was the first sorority established by African American women.
  3. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (ΚΑΨ): Founded in 1911 at Indiana University Bloomington, it's known for its dedication to achievement.
  4. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (ΩΨΦ): Established in 1911 at Howard University, it's known for its commitment to brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
  5. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (ΔΣΘ): Founded in 1913 at Howard University, it's focused on public service and social activism.
  6. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (ΦΒΣ): Established in 1914 at Howard University, it emphasizes brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
  7. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (ΖΦΒ): Founded in 1920 at Howard University, it promotes sisterhood, scholarship, and service.
  8. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (ΣΓΡ): Established in 1922 at Butler University, it focuses on sisterhood, service, and scholarship.
  9. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. (ΙΦΘ): Founded in 1963 at Morgan State University, it emphasizes brotherhood, leadership, and service.

Each organization has its own unique history, values, traditions, and philanthropic endeavors. They play significant roles in fostering leadership, academic excellence, community service, and social activism among their members and within the broader communities they serve. These organizations continue to have a strong presence on college campuses and make substantial contributions to society.
